I Spy: Fantasy

I Spy Fantasy is the latest software game based on the neat children's books that combines visual searches a la "Where's Waldo" with puzzles, riddles and word plays. These books are a natural port to the computer, based as they are on visual puzzles.

There are three themes to explore: medieval, ocean and space. Each is comprised of various interactive pages, where children are asked to find certain items on the page. These may be items, words or numbers, or visual plays on these items. Children may be asked to find "CREEPY, three anchors, a third that's blue, a shoe" and other sundry things. Many of these items are displayed very imaginatively and are not easy to find! In each theme, children will have to successfully complete all the interactive pages, then do a few more tasks to either find sunken treasure, defeat a dragon or travel to an alien planet.

There are six areas in each theme to explore, and each theme has three difficulty levels, for a total of fifty-four puzzle pages in all. Even the easiest levels will require some thought, especially for younger players, so there are many hours of play in this program.

These puzzles are delightfully engrossing, and will afford much amusement to boys and girls ages 5-10. An excellent purchase for any time, and especially over the holidays!

Gameplay: 9
Hours of fun puzzle solving for kids! These puzzles are high in critical thinking, and will really exercise those brains while providing lots of fun.

Graphics: 9
Excellent graphics that look exactly like the books.

Sound: 8
There really is no "theme" music as such, which I for one find refreshing. This program seeks to emulate the experience of reading the book, which is a quiet activity. There are sound effects that are fun to hear.

Difficulty: Medium
These puzzles are not extremely difficult, but aren't that easy, either, and will require diligence and patience. Many younger children won't find all the things the first few times.

Concept: 8
A great idea, using the I Spy books for a children's puzzle game.

Overall: 9
A quality program that kids will enjoy, and parents will love. A good price, too!
